City officials urge residents to not take wildlife removal into their own hands in Mississauga

In an official release today (July 22) municipal representatives are urging Mississauga-based residents to be cautious when removing wildlife from residential areas.

Mississauga Animal Services is currently urging residents conducting household maintenance to be mindful of areas like attics, chimneys, decks and porches, as they are the locations where local wildlife will likely stow away during the summer season.

When dealing with these unwanted tenants, municipal officials are imploring residents not to take matters into their own hands, by either cornering or trapping animals who have invaded residential areas.

Instead, the city is calling on residents to hire professional removal services when encountering such incidents, not just because it is humane — but also — because personal removal of animals is illegal in Ontario.

According to the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, no citizen can relocate wildlife beyond 1 km. Additional information provided by the city also indicates that trapping an animal can severely harm them — beyond that — if a trapped animal is a nursing mother, her young may also potentially come to harm.

When looking into wildlife removal services, municipal officials urge residents to:

  • Insist on humane removal
  • Inquire about a full property inspection
  • Be aware of unethical practices
  • Acquire specifics on animal removal
  • Inquire about further prevention
  • Acquire referrals

Additional information surrounding safe animal handling procedures can be found on the City of Mississauga’s official website.
