Child struck by a bus outside a school in Mississauga

An 11-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after getting hit by a transit bus near a Mississauga school on Thursday afternoon.

According to initial police reports, the incident happened outside Lisgar Middle School, near Derry Road and Ninth Line in the northwest part of the city.

Peel Regional Police said later in a post to social media the girl was struck by the transit bus, reported to be a MiWay bus, at around 2:30 p.m. She was transported to hospital “in life-threatening condition,” police added.

Reports indicate the girl was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Investigators remain on the scene, trying to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Those who live in the area reported hearing sirens throughout the neighbourhood as emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

Lisgar Road remains closed between Beacham Street and Dillingwood Drive.

Updates are expected later today.
