Rolling through a checkstop with more than 30 grams of cannabis in the car has led to charges for a novice teen driver from Brampton and their three adult passengers, police say.

The arrests happened on Oct. 3 while the OPP says officers from the Caledon detachment were working a RIDE spot check on the Valleywood Boulevard offramp from Highway 410.

Police say a 17-year-old driver from Brampton came through the checkstop around 11:30 p.m. in a vehicle with three other occupants, which led to a drug investigation.

During the stop, officers found “a large quantity of cannabis” and the four occupants of the vehicle were arrested and charged, police say.

The charges indicate more than 30 grams of dried cannabis were found during the checkstop.

A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with multiple offences related to Class G licence violations including drive on prohibited highway and drive at unlawful hour, as well as distribute over 5g of dried cannabis – by youth, and possession of over 5g of dried cannabis – by youth.

Jahsiah Dickson, 20, and Nokutenda Matingo, 19, both of Brampton, and Triston Smith, 20, of Caledon, were all charged with possession of over 30g dried cannabis in a public place, possession of illicit cannabis, and possession for the purpose of distributing.

The 17-year-old’s identity cannot be released due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

All four of the accused are scheduled to make a court appearance in Orangeville on Oct. 28 to answer the charges.
