Fall is a great time to find cheaper deals on travel.

Travel generally winds down in the fall so those with time can find less expensive flights and hotels, search aggregator and travel agency Skyscanner says.

After the summer rush and before the Christmas holiday is the perfect time to take advantage of shoulder season, which refers to the time before and after peak season, Skyscanner says.

Coming up from September to November, this period offers an ideal mix of pleasant weather, fewer tourists, and attractive deals, the agency says.

“Airfares are tied to supply and demand, and prices are always cheaper when there are more seats available. While bookings remain mostly short-term, demand around school holidays is always higher than off-peak, so expect to pay less than if you travel during busy times,” Skyscanner travel expert, Laura Lindsey says.

Europe seems to be a popular choice this fall — Skyscanner found searches for flights from Toronto to Paris are up 62 per cent for shoulder season.

Skyscanner found some the best travel deals to European destinations:
  • Ireland: from $600
  • Netherlands: from $680
  • France: from $717
  • United Kingdom: from $837
  • Spain: from $941

These prices are based on roundtrip flights from Toronto for travel between Sept. 22 to 28, as of Sept. 3.

These prices can change.

“As seats fill, prices rise, but airlines are watching booking trends very closely and increasing flights on busier routes. As they do this, prices will change,” says Lindsey.
