Free Brampton recreation seniors memberships

This year marks Brampton’s golden anniversary and the city is celebrating the occasion by giving every senior in the city free Brampton Recreation memberships.

The new initiative is an expansion of the city’s free swim, skate and walking track memberships offered to seniors 70 years old and up, but with many more options for users to choose from.

From fitness centre memberships and aquafit drop-in classes to dance programs and sports, there are over 70 activities for seniors to participate in free of charge this year starting on June 1.

The free passes will be available to Brampton residents who are 70 years old or older. Applicants will need to provide proof of residency in Brampton, like as a driver’s licence or a letter with a home address, proof of identity and age. The program is only open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

The city says making more programs available for seniors can improve their physical activity and better health, mental wellness, and emotional well-being.

“By eliminating financial obstacles, we proudly support our seniors in maintaining their well-being with free, local recreational activities,” Brampton Coun. Rowena Santos said in a statement.

The city will also be hosting an event on June 4 at the Cassie Campbell Community Centre to mark both Seniors Month and the launch of the new Brampton Recreation seniors’ imitative.

The City of Brampton was formed with the merger of Chinguacousy Township, the Town of Brampton and Toronto Gore in 1974.

With the theme of “telling the story of Brampton’s past, present and future” for the 50th anniversary, the city is holding a year’s worth of events across the city, including a huge Brampton Birthday Celebration on June 29 in Chinguacousy Park and a travelling exhibition by the Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) highlighting Brampton’s history.
