City workers strike looms as negotiations break down in Brampton

Brampton residents are invited to City Hall this weekend to celebrate the city’s Tamil community.

January is Tamil Heritage Month, recognizing and celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of Tamil communities across the country.

The City of Brampton is honouring the city’s Tamil connections with a celebration at the Brampton City Hall Atrium on Saturday in partnership with the Brampton Tamil Association and Brampton Tamil Seniors Association.

The event will include live performances, samples of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, and give Bramptonians a chance to learn about the rich history and culture of the Tamil community.

According to a 2021 United Nations resolution, it’s believed between 80,000 to 100,000 people died in the decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebel group. Both sides have been accused of atrocities during the conflict.

In January 2021, Brampton City Council passed a motion to recognize the contribution of the Tamil community in Brampton through the construction of a monument. Ontario recognizes a seven-day period ending on May 18 as Tamil Genocide Education Week.

The City of Brampton’s Tamil Heritage Month celebrations run this Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Brampton City Hall Atrium. For more information visit www.Brampton.ca.
