The Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has confirmed two people died in the explosion on the Rainbow Bridge linking Ontario and New York.

An explosion occurred shortly before 1 p.m. It involved a vehicle leaving Canada and reportedly blowing up on the American side of the bridge. Reports were initially unsure if the incident was a car fire or an explosion.

However, the Buffalo office of the FBI confirmed a short time later the incident was, in fact, an explosion and that it occurred on the U.S. side of the popular bridge connecting the two countries. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the FBI and New York State Police were investigating the incident as possibly terror-related. However, it has not been confirmed whether this was an attack or an accident.

The FBI said the situation was “fluid” at this time and did not share further details beyond confirming the explosion.

The car can be seen wheeling into the border on the American side, confirming it did not come from Canada. An image obtained by NewsNation shows the car airborne before the explosion.

Reports of fatalities came a short time later, a little after 3 p.m. The Medical Centre did not immediately confirm how many people were killed, but it was later revealed two people died. A third person is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After the explosion, the OPP confirmed they were also closing down all other border crossings including the Fort Erie Peace Bridge, the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge and Hwy. 405. “You can expect heavy delays in the Niagara area,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, “If you are planning on crossing the border, please delay travel until those highways and closures have reopened.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, the border bridges in Niagara are all closed at this time due to an incident in the United States. We are monitoring the developments. There is no known threat on the Canadian side,” said Niagara Regional Police. The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is also closed to all foreign flights.

“This is obviously a very serious situation,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told parliament. He confirmed he’d been briefed by the national security and intelligence advisor, the Canada Border Service Agency and Transport Canada, all of whom are “fully engaged in providing necessary support.”

Noting that the four Niagara-area crossings are closed Trudeau said others are ready to be shut down should the need arise. He then left parliament to head to another briefing on the situation.
