Dharam Singh Dhaliwal is wanted for the first-degree murder of Pawanpreet Kaur.

A Canada-wide manhunt is on for the man accused of shooting a Brampton woman to death while she was working at a Mississauga gas station last year.

Peel Regional Police say 30-year-old Dharam Singh Dhaliwal is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for the first-degree murder of Pawanpreet Kaur.

Kaur was shot and killed on the night of Dec. 3 while working at the Petro-Canada gas station on the northeast corner of Britannia and Creditview Rds. in Mississauga.

A customer found the 21-year-old from Brampton shot and called 911. Emergency crews arrived on the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but Kaur died of her injuries.

Police now say Dhaliwal is on the run and has been missing since September. Investigators believe Dhaliwal’s disappearance was intentional and part of a larger plan to murder Kaur.

Dhaliwal is described as a South Asian male standing approximately 5’8” and weighing 170 pounds. He has a tattoo on his left hand, and police say Dhaliwal should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone who sees Dhaliwal is warned not to approach him and should contact the police immediately.

Earlier this month, police say two of Dhaliwal family members were arrested in Moncton in connection to the murder. Pritpal Dhaliwal, 25, and Amarjit Dhaliwal, 50, were arrested on April 18 and charged with one count each of Accessory to Murder After the Fact.

Kaur’s death was the 13th murder in Mississauga this year, and the 27th in Peel.

Police have said the suspect “wore a three-quarter-length dark winter jacket with a hood, dark winter boots, dark pants, a dark winter toque and white gloves. It appears that the suspect was smoking a cigarette. The suspect did not pull the hood up over their head until shortly before shooting the victim at close range.”

Police collected video footage and interviewed several witnesses in order to determine the shooter’s movements in the hours before the killing, saying that the suspect was on foot in the vicinity of the homicide scene three hours prior to the shooting.

“During that time frame, the suspect was observed crossing over Britannia Rd., east of the intersection, and crossing Creditview Rd., north of the intersection. The suspect may or may not have visited this location in the past,” police said.

The killer was then spotted running from the scene westbound across Creditview Rd., then westbound on Britannia Rd., and then westbound onto Camgreen Circle, police said.

GoFundMe page has been started to support Kaur’s family in India as they deal with her tragic death. The fundraiser has raised more than $5,450 of a $20,000 as of Monday afternoon.

Police are urging Dhaliwal to seek legal counsel and turn himself in, and say anyone found assisting or harbouring  Dhaliwal will face charges.
