Rallies are planned in support of Canada Post workers in Mississauga, Hamilton and Ottawa on Thursday.
For nearly a year, Canada Post and the union representing its workers, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, have been in contract talks. Last weekend, talks were “less productive” than the union hoped.
The Crown Corporation said in a news release late Monday that neither side has provided the minimum 72-hour notice of their intent to start a labour disruption, but the Canadian Union of Postal Workers repeated a threat on its website that it “won’t shy away from taking the next step” if there is no real movement at the bargaining table.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said they are looking for fair wages, safe working conditions, the right for all workers to retire with dignity and the expansion of public postal services for all communities.
Labour and union allies will rally for postal workers this Thursday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said in a press release.
The union wants to let “Canada Post and the federal government know that they support postal workers, and to demand that Canada Post come to the bargaining table with real solutions to help workers.”
Solidarity rallies with union members, labour leaders and workers are planned on Thursday at the Canada Post Gateway Facility, 4567 Dixie Rd, Mississauga at 12 p.m.; the Office of the Prime Minister and the Privy Council Office, 80 Wellington St. at 12 p.m.; and at the Stoney Creek Processing Plant, 393 Millen Rd. at 2 p.m.
More rallies are planned in Halifax, Surrey, Nanaimo and Victoria on Thursday and in St. John’s Newfoundland on Friday.
