A bus driver who crashed through multiple backyards in Brampton last week was not at fault and was instead the victim of reckless driving, the city’s mayor says.
Patrick Brown took to social media to post a statement regarding the Oct. 9 incident, which occurred in the area of Bovaird Drive and Edenbrook Trail at around 1:30 a.m.
The mayor said that media reports about the crash “incorrectly suggested that the transit operator was at fault.”
“After speaking with Peel Regional Police, I can confirm that the transit operator was not at fault and, in fact, was the victim in this unfortunate incident,” Brown said.
“The Brampton Transit bus was side-swiped by another vehicle, whose driver has since been charged with failure to yield under the Highway Traffic Act. Video footage from the bus leaves no doubt about the facts.”
Peel police confirmed to INsauga.com that the charge has been laid.
Photos posted on Reddit show the aftermath, with damage to multiple backyards. Fences and even a tree are seen knocked down.
A video on Tumblr also appears to show the moment the crash happened:
Brown said that being a transit operator is a demanding job which requires long hours and dedication.
“The transit operator, along with the residents impacted by this accident, are victims of reckless driving—not the cause of it,” he said.
The bus didn’t have any passengers onboard and the driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The other vehicle involved was an SUV and there were minor injuries reported, police said.
