Broken golf club and metal bar used as weapons lead to charges for Brampton man, police say

Shoplifting, mischief, assault and several other charges have been laid against a Brampton man who police say used a broken golf club and a metal bar as weapons during an attack.

OPP officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment say they got a call about a shoplifter at a convenience store on Midland Avenue in Midland in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

But police say the shoplifter fled the scene only to return a few hours later around 7:15 a.m. That’s when officers say the male suspect got a hold of a broken golf club and a metal bar, and was “creating a disturbance” in downtown Midland.

Police say a 40-year-old man from Brampton was arrested and charged with multiple offences. The accused reportedly assaulted an officer while in police custody.

The OPP says Shawn Michael Baker, 40, of Brampton, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, theft under $5,000, uttering threats and mischief, among others.

The accused is still in custody awaiting a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice on a future date.
