The Urgent Care Centre at Brampton’s Peel Memorial Centre will reopen after months of COVID-19-related closures.
William Osler Health System temporarily closed the urgent care centre in January due to increasing patient volumes in emergency departments caused by the surge in COVID-19 Omicron infections.
The centre had tentative plans to reopen on Jan. 11, but the shut down was extended until at least February.
Osler now says the urgent care centre will reopen on March 21 with plans to expand service to “24/7 operations, pushing forward with services that mean so much to our community.”
“We know that our recovery will take time, but we are here when you need us, to continue to deliver exceptional care to you and your loved ones,” Osler said in a statement.
The health system said it is working with government partners to advance plans for the new Peel Memorial Hospital, the proposed comprehensive Cancer Care Centre in Brampton and refurbishing and renewal of Etobicoke General Hospital.
Osler oversees operations at Peel memorial, Brampton Civic Hospital as well as Etobicoke General Hospital. The health system had been impacted by extreme capacity and staffing pressures due to a surge in COVID-19 Omicron variant patients, issuing a “Code Orange” in January saying hospital demand outpaced capacity across the health system.
Non-urgent surgeries at Brampton Civic were put on hold under provincial COVID-19 restrictions which have since begun to ease.
The province dropped proof of vaccination requirements and removed capacity limits in many settings as of March 1, including Brampton gyms, rec centres and performing arts venues.
“Throughout the pandemic, we have persevered together – rising to every challenge with dedication and resilience,” Osler said in a statement. “We will always be profoundly grateful for the tireless commitment of our health care teams, and the unwavering support of our community, our donors, and our health system and government partners.”
