Brampton’s Navdeep Bains says he is stepping away from politics and won’t run again for the Liberals in the next federal election.

The current MP for the riding of Mississauga-Malton, Bains was elected in 2015 and has served in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet as Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry since 2019.

In a video message posted Tuesday morning, Bains, 43, said that after six elections, he wants to spend more time with his family.

“They have sacrificed so much over the last 17 years. This last year has been hard on families,” said Bains. “My daughters, who are in Grade 5 and Grade 8, have needed me more in the last year and I’ve needed them, too. It’s time for me to put my family first, and I couldn’t be happier about it.”

A graduate of Brampton’s Turner Fenton Secondary School, Bains was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 in the old riding of Mississauga-Brampton South and at the time was the youngest Liberal MP in Parliament.

In 2011, he lost his seat to former Mississauga City councillor Eve Adams and for period he considered running for mayor Brampton in the 2014 election. Instead, Bains stuck with federal politics and reclaimed a seat in Ottawa in 2015 which he has since maintained.
