A Brampton truck driver has been charged after allegedly trying to smuggle 52 kilograms of suspected cocaine into Canada.

The seizure happened on Dec. 4 when the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says a commercial truck entered Canada at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Point Edward.

But while performing a secondary search of the truck’s trailer officers found boxes containing what investigators believe to be cocaine.

In total 52 kilograms of suspected drugs were seized and a 27-year-old from Brampton was arrested and charged by Mounties.

The RCMP has charged Manpreet Singh, 27, of Brampton with the importation of cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

On December 4, 2023, a commercial truck entered Canada at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Point Edward, Ontario, and was referred for a secondary examination. During the inspection of the trailer, border services officers discovered boxes containing 52 kg of suspected cocaine.

Police say the matter is currently before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia.

“Border services officers are committed to protecting our borders and ensuring the security of our communities,” said An Nguyen, director of St.Clair District Operations with the CBSA. “We work in partnership with the RCMP to prevent illegal activity at the border and to keep Canadians safe from illegal drugs.”

The CBSA says some 1,312 kilograms of narcotics have been seized in the Southern Ontario Region between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31.
