Updated changes to the Ontario Building Code will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025, but builders, designers and homeowners still have time to make applications under the old code in Brampton
The building code regulates the minimum construction standards in the Province of Ontario by creating uniformity. It can affect large high-rise developments to small additions made to homes.
The new 2024 standards have been designed to address evolving needs in the construction industry and to streamline the process. There will be a focus on sustainability and safety with an eye to cutting through red tape to allow the industry to meet growth demands.
Overall, more than 200 changes have been made to the code which was last updated in 2012.
To ease into the new rules and regulations, the City of Brampton is allowing a transition period that will allow permit applications to continue under the 2012 Ontario Building Code until March 31, 2025,
“This flexible approach helps prevent unnecessary delays and confusion, allowing projects to move forward smoothly. By offering this extended transition period, the city aims to foster economic growth, enhance the development experience in Brampton and support both safety and compliance,” according to information supplied by Brampton
