One lucky Brampton high school is about to receive a pretty substantial facelift to the tune of $2 million.
The Peel District School Board recently announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Ottawa-based soccer league Footy Sevens to begin constructing and revitalizing the sports field at Heart Lake Secondary School.
The improvements, which will be covered by Footy Sevens, include the installation of an artificial turf field, LED lighting, fencing and renovated bleachers on the sports field. The Peel board will also direct funding to refurbish the existing walking/running track with a synthetic surface.
As for when the project will kick off, the board expects renovations to the track and field to begin in mid-April 2017, with an estimated completion date of August 2017.
“We’re looking forward to partnering with Footy Sevens to bring top-notch sports facilities and programming to Peel students and the community,” notes Jaspal Gill, associate director of operational support services for the Peel board. “When opportunities like these present themselves, it’s clear that they are a win-win for everyone involved, but most of all for our students.”
Footy Sevens is covering all of the costs associated with the field improvements, including design, construction and maintenance-related costs. According to the board, the soccer organization will be making an investment of approximately $2 million in capital to improve the field at Heart Lake.
“We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Peel District School Board to build a top-class, all-weather facility to extend the recreational opportunities for the students and community of the Heart Lake area,” says Chris Surgeoner, partner with Footy Sevens. “We’re excited to host our adult and youth sports programming at a facility that has been designed to meet the highest safety and performance standards year after year. It’s been a pleasure to work with the Peel board so far and we look forward to continuing to build upon this relationship at this site for the benefit of all.”
Because Footy Sevens will be funding the major reno, it will be able to use the facility for its leagues, as well as rent the field out to community groups outside of regular school hours. Naturally, Heart Lake school teams will also be able to use the revitalized field for training and games. Free use by not-for-profit community groups will be subject to availability.
Footy Sevens will be responsible for fee-setting and facility bookings outside of school use.
“As the trustee for Heart Lake Secondary School, I know that these improvements will mean a great deal to the students and staff, and I know that the benefits will extend well beyond the school into the community,” Notes Suzanne Nurse, trustee for wards 2 and 9 in Brampton. “These improvements have been a long time coming, and we’re pleased to see a community partner step forward to help us modernize the field for our students.”
