Brampton’s new medical school could get a name change before it’s even built.

On Tuesday, Ryerson University’s Board of Governors unanimously approved a motion to rename the institution as the Toronto Metropolitan University.

Brampton is set to be home to the university’s new School of Medicine which could be accepting students as soon as 2025, but the university is still unsure if the new school will bear the Ryerson name or not.

“At this time, we cannot confirm any changes to the name of the School of Medicine coming to Brampton,” a university spokesperson told insauga.com.

Brampton’s new School of Medicine is set to receive 80 undergraduate seats and some 95 postgraduate positions.

The institution will be the first new medical school in Ontario in over 30 years.

The decision to change the university’s name comes after backlash surrounding the namesake of Egerton Ryerson and his ties to Canada’s residential school system.

A panel put forward 22 recommendations which included the name change and other changes aligned with Truth and Reconciliation efforts, including not reinstalling a statue of Ryerson topped by protesters last year.

The name change is effective immediately, and the university said the new name will “better reflect its values and aspirations” while maintaining its “mission, vision and visual identity.”

“Metropolitan is a reflection of who we have always been – an urban institution dedicated to excellence, innovation, and inclusion and who we aim to be – a place where all feel welcome, seen, represented and celebrated,” President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi said in a statement.

Speaking to reporters earlier this month, Lachemi was optimistic that the Brampton school could see its first group of students start classes in September 2025.
