A man vying for a position on Brampton city council said he was attacked by two men near his home yesterday (Sept. 13).

Raman Vasudev, 66, who is running for the for seat in Wards 3 and 4, doesn’t know if the attack was politically motivated, but vowed to continue his campaign.

“I don’t know what was their plan, and they tried to come close to me,” he told reporter today. “The moment they came up very close to me I said ‘what do you want from me?’”

Vasudev said he was collecting his mail nearby his home around 5 a.m. when he was confronted by the men who began striking him. They hit him in the face and on the back which he says has forced him to wear a brace.

He said he was caught totally off guard, but the incident ended as quickly as it began as his assailants ran off after doing their damage.

Peel Police say they were notified of the incident.

While he addressed the media, Vasudev was joined by Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and other council candidates who condemned the violence.

Vasudev said he doesn’t know if the attack came from those who oppose his candidacy, but quickly added he wouldn’t be intimidated as intends to continue his pursuit of the seat on council.

He said he usually goes out for a walk at that early hour but this time he went to the mailbox because he is waiting for a urgent letter.

Vasudev said he believes that crime is Brampton is getting worse and steps must be taken to win back the streets.
