Starting next September, hospitals in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills will be hosting students from Brampton’s Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine in a clinical learning environment.

The affiliation agreement between the university and Halton Healthcare, signed earlier in June of 2024 and announced Wednesday (July 17), makes the school the organization’s newest academic partner.

The partnership will help medical students, residents, and health professionals advance their medical education and training in the region, fostering innovative research, collaboration and community engagement.

“This exciting partnership further paves the way in advancing the provision of quality care, bolstering physician recruitment and retention for the Halton Healthcare community that we so proudly serve,” said Melissa Farrell, President and CEO of Halton Healthcare. “Our community is growing at a rate more than double the provincial average with an increase of 200,000 in the next 15 years.

“The community will need an influx of primary care providers for many years to come.”

The TMU School of Medicine, set to open in September of 2025 at 150 Central Drive in Brampton, is intentionally focused on increasing primary care capacity with a target of 60 percent residency spots in family medicine and a commitment to fostering opportunities for international medical graduates.

Plans are that the university will welcome its inaugural class of 105 residents in July 2025 and another 94 MD students later on that year in September, pending successful preliminary accreditation.

“Halton Healthcare has a rich history of supporting physician and clinician training, with longstanding academic affiliations with institutions such as McMaster University and Mohawk College,” said Dr. Stephen Chin, Interim Vice-President, Medical Affairs, Halton Healthcare. “By partnering with TMU, Halton Healthcare fosters an environment that prioritizes continuous learning, innovation, and excellence in patient care.”
