Brampton man released from prison charged in drug takedown in Guelph: police

A man who was just released from an Ontario correctional facility is the third Brampton suspect charged in connection to a drug bust and armed takedown in Guelph, police say.

What started as a “physical altercation” turned into a drug investigation on Aug. 10 when the Guelph Police Service says officers were called to Macdonell Street around 12:45 a.m.

Witnesses told police that one of the males pointed a handgun at other individuals during the incident, investigators say.

When officers arrived at the scene they located suspects in the area and recovered a loaded Glock handgun and more than $6,000 worth of fentanyl.

Two men from Brampton, a 23-year-old and a 19-year-old, were both arrested and charged in the incident but police say the investigation didn’t end there.

Multiple addresses in both Brampton and Guelph were raided in August by members of the Guelph police, tactical units and Peel Regional Police Service leading to the seizure of suspected fentanyl, codeine and hydrocodone – a narcotic and cough suppressant.

Police also found more than $6,500 cash and an over-capacity magazine containing 9mm ammunition.

Guelph police say two men from Guelph aged 43 and 22 were each charged with possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking.

Then on Wednesday, police say a 22-year-old Brampton man was arrested after being released from the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton. Police said the man was incarcerated “on other matters” not related to the Guelph incident.

Police have not released the identity of the accused but say he has been charged with possessing fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.

The Brampton man is scheduled to make a court appearance on Jan. 28.
