The City of Brampton has announced a big contribution towards Canada’s “30×30” conservation goal.

The City said in a news release that it contributed 1,924.5 hectares of natural heritage lands towards the country’s commitment to protect 30 per cent of land and water by 2030.

The initiative is referred to as the “30×30” target, the release noted.

Brampton made the contribution in collaboration with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

An “extensive assessment” of the lands was carried out and it determined that most of Brampton’s Natural Heritage System — a network of woodlands, wetlands, lakes, rivers, and more — met the standards needed to be included in Canada’s target.

“These areas provide essential ecosystem services such as air and water purification, biodiversity maintenance, flood reduction, recreational opportunities and greenhouse gas absorption,” the release said.

They also provide a habitat for species at risk.

Areas within the assessment included Heart Lake Conservation Area, Claireville Conservation Area and Conservation Drive Park.

“This remarkable contribution demonstrates Brampton’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said.

“By protecting our natural heritage lands, we are not only preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change but also enhancing the quality of life for our residents.”
