Brampton human trafficking suspect charged as police search for more victims

Police are looking for more victims of an alleged human trafficker from Brampton arrested earlier this week after a violent assault on a young woman in Mississauga.
Earlier this month, Peel Regional Police say they were investigating a violent assault in a Mississauga hotel.
Police say officers determined that a woman in her 20’s was being trafficked in the sex trade by the suspect, who exercised control over aspects of the victim’s life and profited financially.
On Thursday (May 19), police arrested a 25-year-old Christopher Canete from Brampton and charged him with:
- Assault cause bodily harm – strangulation
- Assault
- Theft Under $5,000
- Procuring
- Human Trafficking
- Receiving Material Benefits
- Exercise Control, Direction or Influence
- Derive Material Benefit
- Assault with a Weapon
The accused was held for a bail hearing in Brampton.
