Brampton health-care worker celebrating big lotto win

Forget catching lightning in a bottle, Brampton resident Shirley Broomfield was able to catch lightning in her bank account.

Broomfield is celebrating winning the Lightning Lotto jackpot on November 2. The prize started at $125,000 but grew to $291,366 before she won.

After winning $2 on her first ticket, Broomfield decided to try her luck a second time, which turned out to be a very good decision.

“The clerk said, ‘Hold on here, you won a big prize.’ I asked if he was joking and he whispered ‘No,’” she said. “I started crying and laughing—I was so shocked! It’s big money. I don’t know how I got home after that. I was crying the whole way.”

The health-care worker said she plans to put the money aside for the future and invest in a trip back home to the Philippines.

“I haven’t seen my family in so long and I miss them,” she said. “I feel so thankful for this blessing.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Casablanca Ticket Agency on Kennedy Road in Brampton.
