Brampton Fire and Emergency Services celebrates Fire Prevention Week with an open house.
This year is the 100th Anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, a time to focus on how to stay safe during a fire. The week started in 1922 in the U.S. as a public education campaign. It is held each year during the week of Oct. 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.
This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape”, encourages people to think about an escape route and ensure homes have working smoke alarms.
“Today’s homes burn faster than ever,” the campaign notes. “You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.”
To celebrate the week, Brampton Fire held a series of open houses at fire halls. The final one is Friday (Oct. 14) at Station 202, 280 Bramalea Road from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
