The Brampton City Council is making plans to demolish the Victoria Park Arena.
In last week’s council meeting (May 29) the council approved of the work. The arena has been out of service since 2016 when a spontaneous combustion fire damaged the entire building.
The City received a $2.4 million insurance due to the damages.
The City has been debating what to do with the building and location ever since.
A staff recommendation gave the council three options on what could be done:
- Demolish the old structure and replacing it with a new one.
- Re-purposing the building with new additions.
- Demolish the building and declaring sell the land.
The council ultimately decided on option 1, approving a $17.5 million budget to demolish the arena and replace it with a new recreation centre.
As the old building has been around since 1967, it had a special place in Brampton’s community. Because of this, the council plans to save and use as much of the old building as possible into the new facility.
