This past week, Nandini Sharma, a young athlete from Brampton, was named one of 55 Canadian athletes selected by Petro Canada and the COC to receive a Fuelling Athletes and Coaching Excellence (FACE) Program grant.

This grant provides assistance with training, equipment and expenses associated with travel to both the athletes and their coaches by providing them each with $5,000.

Funding of the FACE Program is courtesy of Petro Canada and has been supporting athletes since 1988 and invites them to annual summits, which assist in their personal-brand development.

Sharma, who is a multisport para athlete, was selected and was invited to Hockey Canada’s 2019 Nextgen Para Hockey Prospects Camp.based on the potential she has shown in athletics.

Para Athletics, which is also known as Track and Field, is the biggest competition at the Paralympic Games where athletes all represented from all disability categories.

She is coached by Lisa Myers and is also a student at Ryerson University. Her paraplegia is the result of a car accident that took place in 2010.

Past recipients of this grant include Natalie Wilkie, Mac Marcoux and Rosie MacLennan, who all won Canadian medals at the most recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.
