Boxing Day in Ontario cities: What’s Open & Closed

This year, Boxing Day falls on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024 in Ontario.
The post-Christmas holiday is called Boxing Day because, starting in medieval Britain, servants had a day off and would receive a gift box. Most stores and other businesses will be open after being closed on Christmas Day.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Boxing Day in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Niagara Falls and the Niagara Region:
Open:
On Boxing Day, most major grocery stores (including Whole Foods) will be open, along with all major shopping malls (Square One Shopping Centre, Erin Mills Town Centre, Dixie Outlet Mall, Heartland Town Centre, etc.), the Celebration Square ice rink, the Mississauga Chinese Centre, select LCBO locations (call ahead), select Beer Store locations (3154 Hurontario St., 420 Lakeshore Rd. E., and 5800 McLaughlin Rd), movie theatres, Costco locations and the Walmart Supercentre at Square One. Most cafes, restaurants and bars will be open, but always call ahead to be sure.
Closed:
All non-essential federal, provincial, regional and municipal government offices will be closed, along with the 311 Mississauga Citizen Contact Centre. Banks, libraries, community centres and Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery) will also be closed.
MiWay will operate on a regular Saturday service schedule on Dec. 26 and GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.
There will be no waste or recycling pick-up on Boxing Day and all Community Recycling Centres will be closed.
Open:
On Boxing Day, most major malls (including Bramalea City Centre and Shoppers World) will be open, along with major grocery stores and big retailers (Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, etc). Most cafes, restaurants and bars will be open (but call ahead to confirm), along with select Beer Store locations (198 Queen St. East, 80 Peel Centre Dr. and 55 Charolais Blvd.), municipal skating rinks and select rec centres.
Closed:
The Brampton Animal Shelter, libraries, non-essential federal, provincial, regional and municipal government offices, banks, Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery) and community recycling centres will be closed. The Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) will also be closed.

Brampton Transit will operate on a reduced holiday schedule and GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.
There will be no waste collection on Dec. 26.
