Clarkson Crossing is making way for new store.

A large chunk of a Mississauga plaza has been demolished to make way for a new store.

Crews were on site today (August 13) at Clarkson Crossing Plaza to begin the teardown process of the building that once housed Turtle Jack’s restaurant, Daylight Grill, Pet Valu and Water Land.

The plaza is located at the southwest corner of Royal Windsor Drive and Southdown Road.

A new replacement structure will house Winners and HomeSense.

Owners of the property, RioCan, the company that operates the plaza, could not be reached for comment but their website confirms the addition of a combined Winners/HomeSense.

The plaza is also home to Metro, Shoppers Drug Mart, Mark’s, LCBO, Mastermind Toys and several take-out restaurants.

Reaction from the community to the change was swift with many lamenting the loss of the former stores while accepting that Winners/HomeSense will do well at the location.

“I really miss the Daylight Grill, went there for breakfast for years, too bad they couldn’t find a another home in the plaza,” commented a member of a Clarkson group on Facebook.

Daylight Grill has since relocated to Burlington.

“The LCBO, Metro, and now Winners…this won’t bode well for my credit card,” said another member of the same group.

Changes at the plaza have been long rumoured and were confirmed late last year when the existing shops weren’t invited back when their leases expired.

The moves have also fueled speculation about the future of nearby Clarkson Village Shopping Centre which currently houses HomeSense.

It’s not likely the two stores will coexist in the same community which means Clarkson Village will be looking for a new anchor tenant or, as many believe, the shopping centre will add a housing component.

Clarkson Village Shopping Centre has long been desired for its condo potential by both political and business interests. A much-ballyhooed redevelopment was to take place a decade ago but that plan was ultimately scrapped.
