The city has unveiled plans to honour members of Brampton’s Black community with a month of events and celebrations.

February marks Black History Month, and the city will be recognizing the achievements and contributions of Black residents across Brampton’s 50-year history.

The month of city-led events and programs starts on Feb. 1 with the raising of the Pan-African flag at Ken Whillans Square, followed by a ceremony honouring 100 Black community builders.

Guests will see a special screening of “Steadfast: The Jean Augustine Story”, and a talk from Augustine, who made history as the first African Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons. The event will also feature a special presentation of the Mayor’s award that will honour 100 Black trailblazers in Brampton.

“This month serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and brilliance of our community,” said Gwyneth Chapman, senior advisor with the city’s Black economic, social, cultural & youth development unit.

“In Brampton, we embrace the opportunity to amplify the voices and stories shaping our city and foster a stronger sense of unity and understanding among us all. Black History Month is not just a celebration; it is a call to action, urging us to continue the journey.”

Other city initiatives include free programs in eight Brampton Library branches as well as online, including self-care and wellness for Black community members, success stories from Black-owned businesses, and author visits.

For the second year, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services will have a fire truck wrap showcasing the contributions from the Black community that helped shape the international fire service, serving as a learning and education opportunity for all members of the Brampton community.

And Brampton On Stage has plenty of performances including music, stand-up comedy and more at the Lester B. Pearson Memorial Theatre and The Rose Brampton.
