Beef tongue products possibly contaminated with listeria are being recalled across Ontario after being sold in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto and other cities.
The updated recall notice comes after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found listeria monocytogenes in beef jelly tongue products sold at grocery stores and retailers.
At least four Ontario residents have fallen ill after eating the products and more were added to the recall on Wednesday.
Health Canada says the recalled beef jelly tongue products were “either clerk-served, sliced, chunked or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name or best before date.”
“Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled product are advised to contact their retailer,” Health Canada says.
Food may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick if contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness, Health Canada warns.
The bacteria can be fatal in severe cases.
Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at higher at risk and contamination can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.
Health Canada says not to consume the recalled products, which should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
Here’s a list of where the recalled products were sold in Mississauga, Brampton and Toronto:
