Families looking for a fun outing this summer may be interested in a puppet show coming to Mississauga.

The Slovenian adaptation of Pinocchio makes its North American debut at the Maja Prentice Theatre in Mississauga this month.

This new adaptation of Pinocchio, the classic story of a wooden boy who wishes to become a real boy, is an award-winning puppet show from from Maribor, Slovenia, according to a press release from Crane Creations, an immigrant-founded, women- and youth-led professional theatre company based in Mississauga.

“Our live, in-person event promises to be a night of wonder and excitement, complete with dazzling puppets, captivating sound, and a talented cast of performers,” writes Crane Creations.

This adaptation returns to the original story from Italian author Carlo Collodi who wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio in 1881 and 1882. It starts in “the carpenter’s workshop where the carpenter’s tools revive, and pieces of wood on carpenter’s table become a world of its own.”

Pinocchio is produced by Maribor Puppet Theatre in Slovenia and is presented by Puppet Festival Mississauga, an international festival of puppetry and animation.

“Pinocchio is a metaphor for how mistakes can also shape man,” the Maribor Puppet Theatre writes on its website. “Mistakes aren’t necessarily something bad; they are often the only way to teach us how to better understand and change our lives.”

The 35-minute show is suitable for children eight years old and up.

It is on at the Maja Prentice Theatre, 3650 Dixie Rd., Mississauga for one day, July 22 at 5 p.m.

The show has toured Europe and Australia. On the Canadian tour, Pinocchio will also be performed in Hamilton, Stratford, and Saguenay, Quebec.

Tickets are from $9.85 to $27.96.
