Investigators from the Fraud Bureau have arrested a woman on Monday (June 12), in connection to a lottery scam that began in August 2022.

Abigail Aseani Lindsay, a 27-year-old resident of Toronto, was charged with two counts of defrauding the public over $5000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

The ‘Advanced Fee Lottery Scam,’ targeted elderly victims over a six-month period, primarily residents from Alberta and Manitoba, who were deceived into believing that they had won a substantial lottery prize.

However, they were instructed to pay a fee of $50,000 to the perpetrator, in order to claim their winnings.

The fraudulent activities involved various methods of payment. The victims were directed to transfer funds through bank transfers and to send cash and gift cards via postal services to residential addresses in Mississauga.

After being taken into custody, Lindsay was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on July 31, according to Peel Regional Police.

It is during this court appearance that she will have the opportunity to answer to the charges brought against her.
