Dharam Singh Dhaliwal is wanted for the first-degree murder of Pawanpreet Kaur.

The hunt is still on for a man who police say gunned down a 21-year-old Brampton woman while she worked at a gas station in Mississauga last year.

Pawanpreet Kaur was shot and killed on the night of Dec. 3 while working at the Petro-Canada gas station on the northeast corner of Britannia and Creditview Rds. in Mississauga. A former student at Sheridan College, 21-year-old Kaur was the sole provider for her parents back in India and the eldest of two sisters.

A customer found the 21-year-old from Brampton suffering from gunshot wounds and called 911, and while emergency crews attempted life-saving measures, Kaur died of her injuries.

After months of asking the public for tips, police issued a Canada-wide first-degree murder warrant for 30-year-old Dharam Singh Dhaliwal in April.

Dhaliwal has been missing since September 2022, according to investigators, who believe his disappearance months before the shooting was intentional and part of a larger plan to murder Kaur.

Two of Dhaliwal’s family members in Moncton – his brother Pritpal Dhaliwal, 25, and his mother Amarjit Dhaliwal, 50 – were arrested on April 18 in connection to the murder and have been charged with one count each of Accessory to Murder After the Fact.

Kaur’s death was the 13th murder in Mississauga last year and the 27th in the Region of Peel.

GoFundMe page has been started to support Kaur’s family in India as they deal with her tragic death. The fundraiser has raised more than $5,600 of a $20,000 goal.

At least three South Asian women have been killed in the last nine months in Mississauga and Brampton with links to intimate partner violence.

In September, 22-year-old Chandanpreet Kaur was stabbed and killed at a busy Mississauga Canadian Tire, and police have charged her husband Charanjeet Singh with first-degree murder.

And Davinder Kaur was killed in Brampton’s Sparrow Park on May 19. The 43-year-old woman was found suffering from stab wounds and died of her injuries, allegedly inflicted by her estranged husband Nav Nishan Singh. Part of the alleged murder was filmed and surfaced on social media following the incident.

The most recent death has activists calling on the Region of Peel to declare “gender-based violence an epidemic” in Mississauga and Brampton.
