It seems quite a few councillors are stepping down from their Regional and City titles leading up to the municipal election this fall.
This Tuesday, Brampton Regional Councillor for Wards 1&5 Elaine Moore announced her retirement. Part of the reason, Moore said, is to spend time with her family and step out of a political spotlight.
“The 2018 municipal election will not see my name on the ballot,” said Moore in a recent statement.
“Politics is a job that we can’t do without the support and understanding of our family and friends and I have the best of both. I am forever grateful to my husband Randy, my two daughters, and their families […] who have never once complained about sharing and sacrificing so I could pursue my passion of service to the community. I think they have waited long enough to have me all to themselves.”
Further, Moore said she is stepping down to give other people a chance to “share their leadership.”
“There are good people in our community, who have never run for political office, who have shown they have a lot to offer through volunteer work; and through their personal and financial investments in our city, I appreciate so much that they have waited patiently and respectfully for my to retire,” said Moore.
“It’s time to step aside and give good people, with vision and a positive outlook on Brampton’s future, and opportunity to share their leadership.”
With Moore’s retirement, that makes two veteran councillors leaving the ballot prior to the October 22, 2018 municipal vote – City Councillor Grant Gibson announced his retirement about six weeks ago.
And that’s not all – Regional Councillor John Sprovieri has also mentioned his intentions to retire. Sprovieri told inbrampton.com some months ago that he promised his family he would retire in 2018. He has been a City and Regional Councillor since 1988. But the door is still open for him, as no formal announcement has been made.
As for Moore, she’s most recently known for shutting down the proposed location for Brampton’s safe injection site, and for being part of the group of councillors that’s against the Hurontario LRT project. Notably, Moore once brought a stack of printed emails to a meeting to prove that a resident had been emailing residents, councillors, and media insensitive remarks about members of the community of different backgrounds for two years.
Moore’s career began in 1989 as a Public School Trustee, and she became Regional Councillor in 2003. Her career has spanned nearly 30 years.
