A workplace closing down is news no one is happy to hear about.
Transcontinental Inc. recently announced printing activities at Transcontinental Printing Brampton will be reduced leading to the plant’s complete closure at the end of December 2019. This means 125 production and support workers will lose their jobs.
TC Transcontinental is Canada’s largest printer. It is also a leader in flexible packaging in North America.
A recent release claims the decision was made in order to optimize the retail printing platform in Canada.
“We are continuously working to align the capacity and costs of our printing platform to business volumes, as we have always done in order to protect the long-term financial health of our sector,” said Jacques Grégoire, the President of TC Transcontinental Printing. “Following an in-depth analysis of the situation, it is with regret that we had to make the decision to close Transcontinental Brampton. We would like to sincerely thank all of the talented employees who have been highly dedicated to this plant over the years.”
In the coming months, activities from the Brampton location will transfer to RBW Graphics and Transcontinental Vaughan in Ontario, as well as to Transcontinental Transmag in Québec. These two plants just installed new state-of-the-art press systems from TC Transcontinental Printing’s former plant in Fremont, in the United States.
The release claims this new equipment will maximize production.
The closure will result in layoffs that will occur in two phases. The first phase will go into effect on July 7, when 60 production and support workers will be let go. The remaining 65 production and support workers will stay until the complete closure at the end of the year.
The office workers will luckily keep their jobs, as they will be transferred to the Vaughan location.
