Amazon is offering a new delivery option for Canadian customers with a Prime membership.

The company said in a news release that eligible customers can now have Amazon packages delivered inside their garage.

“In-garage delivery aims to provide members added convenience and security in a number of ways, including by helping to protect against weather damage or missing deliveries, ensuring expensive or fragile orders are kept safe, and also offering the ability to receive Amazon packages inside, whether they are home or away,” the release said.

In order for it to work, customers must use myQ Smart Garage technology.

Amazon said customers should look at their door opener to see if it already has myQ technology and if so, they can download the myQ app and connect their garage openers.

If a customer doesn’t have it, they can purchase a myQ Smart Garage Control device on Amazon, which the company said is “easy to install.”

“Once installed, they will have the ability to use in-garage delivery and control their garage door from virtually anywhere with their phone,” the release said.

Customers need to link their myQ account to Amazon Key and once it’s all set up, if a customer selects in-garage delivery, drivers will get one-time, temporary access to drop off the package.

Amazon in-garage delivery is available in more than 1,700 cities, towns and neighbourhoods in Canada, the company said.

It’s currently free for eligible Prime members until March 31, 2025. After that, it will cost $1.99 per order, unless a customer choses the day they want their order to be delivered using “key delivery — pick your day,” at which point the fee will be waived.
