Sometimes, a supermoon happens, making the moon appear larger and brighter as it gets closer to Earth. The term “supermoon,” first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, became popular after three consecutive supermoons in 2016.

According to Space.com, while the difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon is subtle, a supermoon can be up to 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent larger.

This year, there were four consecutive supermoons from August to October, drawing the attention of many skywatchers.

In rare cases, a Blue Moon happens, which is the second full moon in a calendar month. This happens because the moon’s cycle is about 29.5 days, slightly shorter than most months, where two full moons fall within the same month.

The last Blue Moon was on August 19, 2024; the next one is anticipated on August 30, 2025.

Interestingly, a Seasonal Blue Moon can also occur when there are four full moons in a season instead of the usual three. In this case, the third full moon is called the Blue Moon. The next Seasonal Blue Moon will be on May 20, 2027.
