African serval cat escapes sanctuary in rural Ontario

A public safety warning has been issued after an African serval cat escaped from a sanctuary in Ontario.

The serval escaped from a sanctuary on Corrigan Road in Bonnechere Valley Township, west of Ottawa, OPP said in a press release today (Oct. 25).

OPP said they, along with the local Animal Welfare Service, were notified of the escape this morning.

The cat is described as approximately 25 to 30 pounds, and has a spotted coat with pointed ears. The cat could attack mid-sized livestock and pets, police said.

The serval is native to Africa and normally preys on rodents, small birds, frogs, insects and reptiles,

Police ask members of the public to use caution in the area and report any sightings to police. If it is an emergency, call 911.
