Just how many Canadians want U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to turn Canada into America’s 51st state?
Earlier this month, Trump made comments that implied Canada could enter the fold of the U.S. as he noted that, upon his second term as president, he could grant Canada statehood.
The comment generated controversy, as the act would essentially rob Canada of its sovereignty.
The President-elect then indicated he was joking when he made the comment.
Despite this, data analysts at Leger took it upon themselves to see if any Canadians were in line with Trump’s comments.
According to their data, 13 per cent of Canadians say they would like Canada to become the 51st state of the United States, while 82 per cent are adamantly against the idea.
When looking at the finer points of survey respondents, 21 per cent of Conservative voters were in favour of Canada gaining statehood, while 25 per cent of the People’s Party were also on board.
Leger’s survey was conducted from Dec. 6 to Dec. 9, with 1,520 Canadians aged 18 or older responding.
