A nine-year-old girl who was operating an ATV died after it rolled over in Ontario, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release that emergency crews responded to the incident at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Greer Road in North Frontenac Township, which is around 78 kilometres north of Kingston.

OPP said that an individual spotted the rolled-over ATV in a ditch then found an injured nine-year-old girl.

She died at the scene.

Police said the she was from the area.

Const. Robert Martell told INsauga.com the girl was operating the ATV and had two young passengers on it, who suffered “minor scrapes” and were taken to hospital as a precaution.

“It’s unknown how long she was there until found,” Martell said of the girl who died.

It’s not clear what charges, if any, might be laid as the investigation is in its early stages, he said.

“Frontenac OPP continue the investigation into the collision, with the assistance of the Technical Collision Investigation Team, a Collision Reconstructionist, the Frontenac Crime Unit and the Office of the Chief Coroner,” the release said.

Anyone with information was asked to come forward.
