Mississauga is one step closer to building a revamped and modern marina that city officials say would fast become a destination spot for both residents and out-of-towners.

The City of Mississauga submitted a required environmental assessment to the provincial government on Friday, project leaders said in an update.

The plan, in the works for several years and roughly estimated to cost some $75 million, is to develop a new-look Port Credit Harbour that would rejuvenate the area and provide an economic boost to Mississauga’s waterfront community as well.

Around this time last year, Mississauga officials began to wrap up the public feedback stage of the process. presenting to the community a draft environmental assessment that was open to fine tuning.

Moving forward, the EA is now in the hands of Ontario’s environment ministry for review and final approval. However, the plan remains open to public scrutiny and comment until Dec. 6, the city said.

Those interested in reviewing the document can do so at Port Credit Library or by contacting the City of Mississauga for information on acquiring a hard copy. All comments on the EA must be submitted directly to the environment ministry.

Plans for a new Mississauga marina also include a large waterfront park/green space. For more details on that and other components of the undertaking, visit the project website.

City officials said earlier the waterfront overhaul seeks to maximize the location’s advantage as Lake Ontario’s deepest natural harbour in making a new-look Port Credit Harbour a must-visit for Mississauga residents and those from outside the city.

Meanwhile, funding for the marina and surrounding development is one of the key matters still on the table. Mississauga officials said earlier they’re looking to provincial and federal governments for money to complete the redevelopment plan, dubbed by city staff the 1 Port Street East Proposed Marina Project.

Mississauga operates two other marinas in the city — Lakefront Promenade and Credit Village marinas.
