Mississauga hospitals and those who seek health care in the city got a huge boost today (March 1) with a $75 million corporate donation, the largest such gift to a hospital in Canadian history.
The “game-changing” money, announced at a press conference this morning at Credit Valley Hospital (CVH), comes from Mississauga-based real estate company Orlando Corporation.
Orlando, which describes itself as Canada’s largest privately-owned industrial real estate developer and landlord, announced it will match other donations from the community up to a total of $75 million in a multi-year campaign aimed at helping Trillium Health Partners (THP) provide the best possible health care for its patients.
THP operates Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital in addition to the Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke, on the Mississauga border.
Orlando Corporation also donated $75 million last fall to be split between the Scarborough Health Network (SHN) and University of Toronto (U of T).
Orlando officials said at the time that while the company does not own property in Scarborough, it believes health care is a shared responsibility and that the community east of Toronto will put the SHN donation to good use.
The Mississauga company has made it a priority over the years to dig deep into its pockets to help pay for improvements to health care in the GTA.
"Many of our staff who work at our Mississauga office also live in the area and look to @THP_hospital to care for them and their families. This is why this donation today is in honour of our staff and their families."

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie were among the many dignitaries to attend this morning’s announcement at CVH.
Crombie called it “an incredible day” and said the money is badly needed to support health care in what is one of the most rapidly growing areas in Canada.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones described the significant donation as “game changing and life saving,” noting it will allow for expanded research and other crucial services that will make health care more convenient for those in Mississauga and beyond who need it most.
She added that THP is a leader in health care and that the Orlando donation will “help fund what will be the largest hospital in Canada…and ensure Mississauga residents can connect to health care closer to home for generations to come.”
One year ago, THP received a $105 million private donation, the largest-ever such gift to a hospital in the country’s history.
Plans for a huge new Mississauga Hospital were announced just over one year ago. When the facility is completed in a decade or so, on the same property as the current Hurontario St./The Queensway hospital, it will be among the largest hospitals in Canada.
The hospital will open to the public some years down the road as the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, named for the $105 million private donor.
