A motorcyclist has died following a crash in Hamilton.

Emergency crews were called to the crash in the eastbound lane of Barton Street East at Barnesdale Avenue North shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Hamilton Police said.

A 74-year-old man from Hamilton was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Barton Street East, approaching Barnesdale Avenue North, police said.

Police said a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 59-year-old man from St Catharines, was travelling westbound on Barton Street East.

The Jeep turned left across the eastbound lanes and the motorcycle struck the side of the Jeep, ejecting the motorcycle rider, police said.

The motorcyclist was transported to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Jeep driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

A stretch of Barton Street East was closed for several hours but has since re-opened.

Police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information or video footage to contact police.
