62-storey skyscrapers in Mississauga win prestigious global award

Two Mississauga skyscrapers that stand high above the city’s downtown core have received a prestigious international award.

The 62-storey highrises, part of a multibillion-dollar condo community known as M City that will number eight towers when completed, were recognized this week with awards of excellence from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Launched in 2017, the development’s flagship towers are known as M1 and M2 and they received the nod in the category of Best Tall Building by Height (200 to 299 metres). Their height in storeys translates to 204 metres.

M3 and M4, the latter to rise 67 storeys into the Mississauga sky at Burnhamthorpe Road West and Confederation Parkway, both remain under construction while the community’s last four structures are expected to follow suit in the near future.

Officials with Rogers Real Estate Development and Urban Capital, developers of the award-winning M City community, said in a news release Wednesday that more than 100 of the “most exemplary” architecture, engineering and construction projects around the globe were recognized in some 20 categories and subcategories by the council.

The council, headquartered in Chicago and widely viewed as “the authority” on official heights of buildings worldwide, also recognizes excellence in other categories that include innovation, urban habitat, repositioning and equity, and diversity and inclusion.

John Anderton, vice-president and treasurer at Rogers Telecommunications Limited, said on behalf of the developers that it’s an honour to be recognized by a globally respected city-building organization.

“M1, M2 and the entire M City community has truly enriched the city of Mississauga, cementing it at the forefront of city building and development on the world stage,” he said in the news release, noting M1 and M2 are the tallest completed buildings in Mississauga, “significantly shaping the city’s downtown skyline.”

Designed by CORE Architects, the towers feature “a distinctive undulating design with seven twisting floor plates, which take turns skewing to each extreme as the buildings rise, stacking in a repetitive pattern,” the developer added.

“The unique geometry creates the impression of fluid movement and lightness of mass, leaving a striking presence on the Mississauga skyline.”

The developer also noted that “equally important is the buildings’ integration with the streetscape. The podiums feature faceted glass walls that form prismatic shapes, housing extensive rooftop amenities, including a skating rink, and street-level retail that enhances the vibrancy of Mississauga’s main downtown thoroughfare.”

In addition, more than two acres of public parkland are also part of M City, the developer said.

The council’s Award of Excellence winners now move on to the next stage of judging. Project teams will present submissions at the council’s 2024 International Conference taking place Sept. 23-27, in London and Paris, where overall winners in each category will be selected.
