Located in Erin Mills, John Fraser Secondary School has had its fair share of notable alumni pass through its doors.

Officially opened in 1991, John Fraser Secondary School has just over 30 years of history in Mississauga yet some of the former students and graduates have made a mark in the world.

Sports stars, musicians and actors have all graced the hallways.

Here are five notable alumni from John Fraser Secondary School:

Yi-Jia Susanne Hou

Violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou was born in Shanghai, China but grew up in Mississauga, and rose to fame on the international concert scene when she won three international violin competitions in France, Italy, and Spain (Long-Thibaud, Lipizer, Sarasate) representing both Canada and China.

She also grabbed headlines in 2009 when she was granted the use of a violin made in 1735 and valued at $6 million.

Matt Johnson

Matt Johnson is an actor, director and writer. His 2016 mockumentary about faking the moon landing, Operation Avalanche, earned him an Athens Film Festival best director award and numerous nominations at festivals around the world. His latest film, Blackberry, is a comedy drama telling the story of the meteoric rise and catastrophic demise of the world’s first smartphone, according to IMDb.

Johnson was known as “the movie guy” at John Fraser, according to a 2017 Now Magazine article.

Dalton Pompey

Dalton Pompey, was drafted in the 16th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010 when he was 17 years old and he made his major league baseball debut for the Toronto team on Sept. 2, 2014. He ended his career with the Jays in 2018. He last played for the Intercounty Baseball League with the Guelph Royals in 2022 and the Los Angeles Angels’ minor league baseball team Salt Lake Bees in 2021.

The former outfielder recently grabbed the spotlight again when he switched careers to become a member of the Hamilton Police Service.

A. J. Saudin

A. J. Saudin is an actor, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Saudin played Connor DeLaurier, a teen with Aspergers Syndrome, in Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2008 to 2015, according to IMDb. Saudin is now reportedly focused on music and released his debut EP, Before I Met You, in 2017.

His sister, Shadia Simmons, also a John Fraser alumnus, played Corrine Baxter in the television series Strange Days at Blake Holsey High.

Manny Malhotra

National Hockey League player Manny Malhotra was born and raised in Mississauga. His first years of high school were at John Fraser but he reportedly graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes high school in Guelph where he played for the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm.

He was drafted by New York Rangers round one, seventh overall, in 1998, according to HockeyDB. The centre went on to play for the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, the San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Charlotte Checkers, Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens, and finally the Lake Erie Monsters in the 2015/6 season.

He was hired as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020.
