While Ontario’s alcohol marketplace has expanded in recent months to convenience stores, big-box stores and more grocery stores, a wide range of products remains at the LCBO.
LCBOs also continue to be the only places where people can purchase spirits, other than at distillery retail stores and LCBO convenience outlets.
With the Christmas season now upon us, many might buy a bottle of wine or liquor for a gift. Enjoying alcoholic beverages is also a common part of the holidays.
Only a select few, however, would likely consider purchasing the most expensive products at the LCBO.
INsauga.com has taken a look at top five costliest products listed at the LCBO and the prices are staggering:
5. $40,000
At number five, for $40,000 you can buy a 750 ml bottle of Highland Park 50-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland.
“This ultra-rare 50-year-old Orkney Island single malt artfully reveals the quality and refinement that comes with the gentle influence of time and place,” the LCBO website says.
“When these are combined with the patience and skill of a craftsman like Highland Park’s master whisky maker Gordon Motion, the results are exquisite.”
4. $47,000
A 700 ml bottle of The Dalmore 45-Year-Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky goes for $47,000.
“Wood resin, canola oil, sultanas, and red currants on the nose. Medium-bodied, with sweet resin, honey, and sherry on the palate, turning to treacle and raisins,” the LCBO listing says about the product, citing the Whisky Advocate.
“The finish is very long, with dark chocolate and spicy oak tannins.”
It was made in Scotland.
3. $55,000
For $55,000, you can get a 700 ml bottle of Bowmore 1969 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
The “extremely rare” product was distilled in 1969, aging in American Bourbon and Spanish Oloroso casks, the LCBO says.
Again, it was made in Scotland.
2. $55,849.95
For nearly $56,000, you can purchase a single 700 ml bottle of The Dalmore Constellation Collection Cask 2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky 1971.
“This 40-year-old single cask was distilled in 1971 and matured for its full four decades in oak from the Ozark Mountains of Missouri,” the LCBO website says.
“Staves for this remarkable Ozark oak cask were cut and left to season for three years before the master cooper handcrafted them into a perfect cask and ‘fired’ the wood to release the natural caramelized wood sugars and vanilla. The cask was then filled with the finest Bourbon whisky in Kentucky.”
The empty cask was selected three years later by distiller Richard Paterson and shipped to The Dalmore distillery in Scotland.
“The rich, complex spirit taken from the large bulbous stills at The Dalmore was laid to rest in the cask for 40 years,” the LCBO says.
1. $69,999.95
Coming in at number one is The Dalmore Cask Curation Series: The Sherry Edition.
For nearly $70,000, you can get three 700 ml bottles, which works out to around $23,333 each.
“The Dalmore Cask Curation Series is a 150-set series of annual limited releases showcasing three rare aged single malts, with each release highlighting a particular style of cask,” the LCBO website says.
“The Fine Cask Curation Series features a 26-year-old vintage Sherry cask finish single malt, a 28-year-old Matusalem cask finish single malt and a 43-year-old Apostoles cask single malt,” the listing adds.
It was made in Scotland.
