Five men from Chile who police say have been renting a home in Oakville face break-and-enter, criminal organization and other charges in connection with at least six break-ins at homes in Mississauga, Toronto and York Region.
York Regional Police say officers were in the midst of an investigation into a group of suspects when they spotted a number of men break into a home in the Avenue Road/Wilson Avenue area of Toronto last Friday just before 8 p.m.
The same culprits then tried a second break-and-enter, at a home in the Indian Road/Woodeden Drive area of south Mississauga, later the same night, police said in a news release on Friday.
Shortly afterwards, the men returned to a rental property near Burnhamthorpe Road and Eternity Way in northeast Oakville, according to investigators.
Subsequently, police followed one man to a nearby gas station and made an arrest.
As investigators were getting ready to execute a search warrant at the home, four additional suspects fled the residence, police said. Four more arrests were made a short time later.
During a search of the home, officers recovered “numerous items of jewelry and valuables,” police said, adding they’ve linked a group of suspects to six break-and-enters and maybe more.
Police believe the group of men to be in Canada “for the purpose of committing criminal offences.”
Michael Brandon Fornells Quezada, 27, Jonathan Alexis Gamboa Carrancio, 36, Claudio Andres Valdes Poblete, 39, Ricardo Javier Parada Neirda, 35, and Daniel Arturo Reyes Miranda, 32, all of Chile, are each charged with:
- six counts break-and-enter commit
- break-and-enter with intent
- possession of property obtained by crime
- participating in activities of a criminal organization
- disguise with intent
- conspiracy to commit
