$40M in upgrades to community centre in Mississauga include new aquatics facility

A community centre in Mississauga’s south end that’s undergoing a $40-million overhaul is expected to reopen to the public next spring — about four or five months later than initially anticipated.
Major renovations to the 52-year-old Carmen Corbasson Community Centre were scheduled to be completed sometime this fall, with a reopening soon thereafter.
However, the latest project update from the City of Mississauga now pegs completion — and subsequent public reopening — for early spring 2025.
The key component of the revamped facility will be a new state-of-the-art aquatics centre that will feature a 25-metre, six-lane pool.
“The redevelopment at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre will see enhanced recreational services for the community and bring greater accessibility and green building standards,” city officials said in an earlier project update.
The hockey arena is also receiving significant upgrades in addition to other areas of the community centre as part of the major facelift.
As work continues into the winter, the city is seeking feedback from residents via an online survey. Deadline to complete the survey is Dec. 1.
The Cawthra Road community centre, which was built in 1972 and is located just south of the QEW, closed to the public in September 2022, with construction starting soon thereafter.
The community centre is one of several across the city undergoing major renovations to combat shortcomings brought about by age.
The city says the $40-million Carmen Corbasson Community Centre redevelopment project “includes the renovation of existing infrastructure to address population growth and changing demographics in the area. It will also include the construction of a new addition that will feature an aquatics and fitness centre. The addition will be connected to the southeast side of the existing building, which will provide the indoor aquatics centre with spectacular views of the neighbouring woodlot.”
Ward 1 Coun. Stephen Dasko said earlier the community centre “has been a staple in the Ward 1 community for more than 40 years” and that it’s “exciting to see the vision for this beloved facility become a reality … This eagerly-anticipated project will enhance the quality of life for local residents by allowing the opportunity for more programming and improved access and safety, while raising the bar on sustainability and green building standards.”
Once completed, the renovated facility will include:
- a fitness centre with cardio machines, weights and fitness studio with wood sprung floor
- a new aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a warm water therapy pool
- a new multi-purpose space
- enhancements to existing multi-purpose spaces
- renovations to the indoor arena
- improved connections to the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre
- improved sustainable and accessible design standards
- improvements to the hockey arena
The redevelopment was recommended and approved as part of the city’s 2019 Recreation Master Plan.
The facility underwent an extensive renovation about 22 years ago, city officials said earlier.
