Two Ontario residents were arrested after U.S. police found 1,146 pounds of suspected cocaine in a transport truck.
The arrest comes after a trooper inspected a commercial truck on Interstate 80 eastbound in Henry County, west of Chicago, around 2:10 p.m. on Nov. 29, Illinois State Police said a press release.
Police described the vehicle as a Volvo truck-tractor, semi-trailer combination. Officers searched the truck and found the suspected cocaine with an approximate street value of more than $40 million, police said.
“ISP’s coordinated focus on trafficking is helping keep dangerous drugs out of our communities,” said Illinois State Police director Brendan F. Kelly. “From commercial motor vehicle inspections, to daily patrol, to targeted anti-violence and trafficking details, ISP is making communities safer.”
Police arrested Ontario, Canada residents 27-year-old Vanshpreet Singh and 36-year-old Manpreet Singh.
A spokesperson for the Illinois State Police told INsauga.com that due to “the sensitive nature of this case” they could not release what city the two people are from.
Vanshpreet Singh and Manpreet Singh face charges of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver cocaine and cocaine trafficking, police said.
They were taken into custody and transported to the Henry County Jail pending a pretrial release hearing. Police have notified Homeland Security Investigations.
