407 tolls going up on certain vehicles in Ontario

If you’re a frequent user of Ontario’s Highway 407, be prepared for possible changes to your toll costs in the new year.
A new rate schedule, starting Jan. 1, 2025, could impact certain vehicles and result in higher monthly driving expenses.
According to a recent news release, officials noted that the toll increase will see rates for light vehicles rise by “three to 14 cents per kilometre,” depending on the time of day and the zone they’re travelling through.
This marks the first toll hike in five years and it comes alongside an increase in several fees, including charges for camera usage, account maintenance and transponder leases.
As a result, 407 ETR says most personal transponder customers can expect an additional $8 on their monthly bills.
Javier Tamargo, President and CEO of 407 ETR, explained the reasoning behind the changes: “With the gridlock issues facing the GTA today, our service has never been more important. We’re working hard to keep traffic flowing smoothly and to improve traffic management in sections of the highway while maintaining the top-notch driving experience that commuters rely on.”
In addition to the toll increases, 407 ETR is introducing 12 new toll zones, up from the previous four, which will allow for more accurate toll rates based on traffic conditions and the time of day.
There will also be new vehicle classifications, with motorcycles paying lower tolls than other vehicles and larger trucks, vans and SUVs towing trailers facing higher toll rates.
For drivers who regularly use the highway, these changes could mean a notable difference in their monthly toll expenses, especially those commuting during peak hours.
To help navigate the new rates, 407 ETR offers an online toll calculator where users can check the tolls before driving.
